Penderyn quarry community page

Hello future

On 02 October 2023 we rebranded to Heidelberg Materials. As well as aligning with our parent company, our new name better reflects the company we are today.

We’re focused on driving down carbon emissions, increasing the use of recycled materials to grow the circular economy and leading our industry towards net zero with innovative projects such as carbon capture and storage.

Some of the new Heidelberg Materials signage and vehicle livery is already in place and we hope to have completed this within the next two years. Please note that our email and website details have also changed.

About Penderyn Quarry

Penderyn is a limestone quarry located eight miles north of Aberdare in South Wales. Working to the maximum planned hours, the plant is capable of producing 500k tonnes of limestone per year. Reserves are in excess of 15 million tonnes. The quarry supplies products to the internal concrete and asphalt businesses, and externally, has a high demand for - 4mm material due to the very consistent quality and colour of the crushed material.

Our employees

Two local brothers each have over 40 year’s service at the quarry (photographed above), whilst Raymond from the village will celebrate 50 years in 2017. There are eighteen full time employees on site.

Interesting Fact: The Quarry was once linked to the rail network, and was used to supply ballast to the sidings at Hirwaun. When the specification for the ballast changed in the 1980’s, the quarry were no longer able to supply and the railway lines were subsequently removed.

Penderyn quarry employee and family receive first aid awards

The awards were presented at a ceremony in February 2016 at Dyfed and Glamorgan Battalion headquarters lichard by the Mayor of Bridgend Councilor Richard Young  in the presence of the commandant Colonel Westlake-Tom as well as senior officers of the battalion and their officer commanding C company Major Grey.

Reopened pool makes a splash

A donation of aggregates and asphalt from Penderyn quarry has helped a local community to reopen a children’s park and paddling pool at Lee Gardens in the village of Penrhiwceiber. A campaign to save the park was started earlier this year after its closure in 2014 due to council cuts.

“We were asked if we could supply materials to complete the surfacing around the pool,” said Syston-based internal sales rep Natalie Waring. “District sales manager Lindsay Haines organised the deliveries and they were delighted.”

Blasting schedule

A blast is scheduled for Thursday, 12 December between approximately 11:30 – 13:30*

*Please note our blast times are approximate and, as such, are subject to change due to weather or operational safety requirements.
