Litter picking in the bag as volunteers clean up

Eight litter-picking volunteers from Whatley quarry have collected around 70 bags of rubbish from nearby roads as part of an annual clean-up.

They cleared three miles of verges as the site’s contribution to the 20-mile environmental initiative shared between members of the Mendip Quarry Producers Association.

Area clerk Dawn Carpenter said plastic bottles were the most common item picked up during their five-hour session.

“The biggest we found were tyres and bits of car bumpers,” said Dawn.

“It was very well organised, with traffic management and everyone in PPE, which we were glad of as it was quite cold.”
