Threeways School visit to Whatley quarry with Earth Science Centre
We recently had the pleasure of hosting students from the Threeways School in Bath, a community school for young people with special educational needs.
The trip was organised by the Somerset Earth Science Centre, which is supported by the Mendip Quarry Producers, a collaboration between operating quarries in the Mendips area.
The pupils had the opportunity to tour the quarry facilities, and once everyone was equipped with their PPE, our Community Support Co-ordinator, Martin Symons took them down to the quarry floor where they watched our impressive machinery in action. They were also able to get up close to some of the quarry vehicles, to learn about their different uses in the quarry.
Back at the Earth Science Centre the group participated in a workshop, experimenting with rocks collected from across the Mendips. The interactive session allowed them to touch, sort and closer examine the rocks, while learning about rock formations and mineral extraction processes.
Steph Harper, Sixth Form Teacher at Threeways School said: “My pupils had a great day learning more about the importance of quarrying and how the materials are used in everyday life. The tour was fun and informative, and we hope to bring a group again next year.”
