Batts Combe quarry Christmas star competition winner

Congratulations to Zoe Goodacre from Axbridge First School, who is the winner of our festive colouring competition and switched on the Christmas star above the quarry last night.

This is the second year we have invited children from Axbridge, Cheddar and Draycott First Schools to take part in the competition. The best three pictures from each school were put forward, with Batts Combe quarry manager Vince Pitt, area clerk Emma Robbins and local liaison representative Nicola Haynes choosing Zoe’s as the overall winner.

“The star is a very popular feature within the local community and last year’s colouring competition was a huge hit,” said Vince. “We wanted to be able to repeat it this year, despite the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions, so we put a Christmas tree at the entrance to the quarry and were able to maintain social distancing while Zoe switched on the lights for the tree, which simultaneously switched on the star.”

As well as the honour of switching on the Christmas star, Zoe received a goody bag of colouring pencils, pens and books, a certificate and her picture returned in a frame.
