Batts quarry visit brings students’ learning to life
Science lessons were brought to life for the Redwood class from Axbridge C of E First School Academy when they visited our Batts Combe quarry to see operations first-hand.
The trip for year three students, who have been studying rocks as part of their science topic, provided them with the opportunity to find out more about how minerals are used, see the scale of some of the machinery involved in quarrying processes and learn about the importance of biodiversity and restoration at quarry sites.
Jess Emery, early career teacher (ECT) at the school, said: “A big thank you to Heidelberg Materials’s Batts Combe team. The children had a brilliant time visiting the quarry and were all really excited by the rocks they were given to take home. The experience has been great for enhancing their understanding of rocks and the processes around formation and excavation.”
Simon Parkes, site manager, added: “We were thrilled to welcome the Redwood class from nearby Axbridge to Batts Combe and to see the pupils’ enthusiasm in finding out more about minerals. We hope the visit has provided a better understanding and insight about how quarries work and the vital role aggregates play in our daily lives.”
